This piece is based on a photograph of a surfer at Hawaii’s renowned Big Wave Invitational surfing competition known as The Eddie, honoring the legendary waterman Eddie Aikau. He exhibited extreme skill and selflessness, ultimately sacrificing his life in an effort to save others.
