My Process
My inspiration comes from photographs I have taken, things I have seen, places I have been, photos taken by friends, and my wild imagination. I have never sketched out anything on the canvas or paper before painting it; I like to let the underpainting of the inks and paints inform the shapes, colors, and direction of each piece. For more complex pieces, I sometimes do a rough charcoal sketch in my sketchbook in order to get the kinesthetic feel of what I am about to paint. My themes often depict my moods, memories, emotions, places that hold significance for me, or scenes from my imagination.

Why do I paint?
Simply stated, I knew that I needed to learn to look for, recognize, and embrace the beauty in the world. The more I studied history and current events, the more I was focusing on the negative. A negative, hopeless mind-set has a paralyzing effect, creates toxicity, and accomplishes nothing. So I enrolled in the Mastery Program of Milan Art Institute as a total beginner and started painting ~ in my 70's! I had never before painted and I never liked coloring (I couldn't stay within the lines). I did not consider myself "talented" or "artistic," but I was determined to learn. In the process, I began to change my focus and look for the glimmers, the beauty and detail in the natural world and also the urban environment. I paint only what brings me joy ~ things I want to look at, art I want to be surrounded with, and art that can speak to the heart of the viewers. The result? Art calmed my spirit, taught me to notice and appreciate what I had previously ignored, and ignited joy. Art became my therapy. As I continue painting, I am learning a lot about myself. I look forward to sharing my art and my art journey with you!
